Jo-Marie Cinco Bohn For Jo-Marie Cinco Bohn, Charleston Catholic High School felt like home. “Charleston Catholic was the perfect fit for me, ” she says. “Smaller classes along with great kids to go to school with during those very influential years. ” Those friendships didn’t fade with time, either. “I am still in touch with many of them today as well as my former principal Debra Sullivan. ” Life has always been busy for Jo-Marie. She now works as a tennis instructor at the Charleston Tennis Club, the same place where she began playing and developing her own love for the sport. “I am a tennis instructor here in Charleston, at the Charleston Tennis Club, where I grew up learning the game of tennis. ” She is still very connected to CCHS. “I am still very connected to CCHS, ” she explains. Both of her children attended the school, and her daughter Jada graduated in 2016. Her family’s connection stretches even further. “I also had a niece and nephew go to school there and I currently have a nephew, Elijah Cinco, still there as a sophomore. ” Beyond family, she has spent years teaching tennis to many Catholic students. “I have been teaching so many kids for years that have attended or are still attending both the middle and high school. ” Some of her best memories come from her time on the tennis team. “My fondest memories of playing tennis at CCHS are not only the kids that played but the coaches. ” One moment stands out as her favorite. “My favorite memory of CCHS tennis is when our coach took us to Lexington to play Lexington Catholic, and of course playing at States representing CCHS every year. ” Tennis is still a part of her life, and she’s happy to keep playing and coaching. When someone asks her for advice on becoming great at the next level as an athlete, she says. “If you want it, you have to work at it, especially on the days you don’t want to. There’s another kid out there that wants it more than you do. ” This is the message that makes you want to work and it stays with you. Especially when spoken by someone who knows what she’s talking about. She is a four-year letter winner at WVU, and also is in the WVU Hall of Fame (2014). Bohn’s career record of 214-73 (.746) is tops in school history, as is her singles record of 112-30 (.789). Playing for coach Martha Thorn, Bohn is the only WVU player to finish her career with two 30-win seasons in singles, and she is the only player in school history to win more than 60 matches in one season (1989-90, 66-19). She is also one of only two players to surpass 50 total wins in a season twice. During her senior year, she finished with more than 40 total victories on the way to earning Atlantic 10 Senior of the Year honors. Bohn finished fifth in singles at the 1992 Atlantic 10 tournament, earning a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament team. Bohn was the 1989 Atlantic 10 Freshman of the Year and was the recipient of the 1991-92 women’s tennis outstanding athlete award. By Aidan Anton
