Growing up in St. Albans and Charleston Catholic, Tommy was known for his outgoing personality. He was a natural connector, surrounded by friends and always engaged in sports, whether it was basketball, baseball, or football. As someone who never met a stranger, Tommy possessed a unique charm that allowed him to easily strike up conversations with anyone. His love for football was evident from a young age. He often spoke about his high school experiences and his desire to continue playing at the collegiate level. Among his cherished memories from Charleston Catholic, he fondly recalled receiving homework help from classmates, highlighting his charm and ability to build relationships. College football opened new doors for Tommy, allowing him to travel extensively, inspire student athletes, and eventually transition into coaching. He had the opportunity to recruit and help young talent, continuing their growth both on and off the field. One of the most significant lessons he learned from his loved ones was the importance of striving for excellence. His motivation encouraged others to pursue their best selves in whatever profession they chose. In reflecting on his legacy, family and friends hope that Tommy will be remembered for his remarkable ability to inspire and motivate young athletes. He believed deeply in the values of trust, love, and communication, and he would advise future Charleston Catholic athletes to uphold these principles in their lives and careers. Tommy Groom spent his entire life immersed in the world of football, beginning as the captain of Charleston Catholic High School. His journey in the sport took him through coaching at various institutions, including Colorado, Maryland, Marshall, Virginia Tech, and Marietta. Over his career, he participated in nine bowl games and concluded his professional journey by managing the sale of football practice gear with Gilman Gear. Tommy Groom's impact on football and the lives he touched will be felt for years to come, serving as a testament to his dedication to the sport and the young people he inspired.
